A northern Ontario man wanted since September for debit card theft was arrested this week at a downtown Sault business, where he uttered threats at security staff, police say.
The police investigation dates back to Sept. 10, 2023, when the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service was told someone stole a debit card from a vehicle on Gibbs Street and afterward used it fraudulently at three different businesses.
Sault police later identified a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest.
The suspect managed to elude police for several months — until March 25, when police received a 911 call reporting a man uttering threats at a business in the 200 block of Bay Street.
“Officers were dispatched to the business where they were located and arrested the accused,” police said in a news release.
As a result of the previous police investigation and Monday’s incident, a 26-year-old man has been charged with theft of a credit card, six counts of use of a stolen credit card, theft, possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of uttering threats and three of failing to comply with a probation order.
The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court on May 27.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
